U Mobile donates RM3 million to Ihsan Madani Fund, provides free internet at flood evacuation centres

Connectivity will help flood victims stay in touch with loved ones and relief workers coordinate operations more efficiently

KUALA LUMPUR — U Mobile has joined in efforts by the private sector to support flood victims with free internet services at temporary evacuation centres in flood-stricken areas.

The telco has also contributed RM3 million to the Ihsan Madani Fund, it announced in a statement today.

The free internet service, which U Mobile is providing in close cooperation with the  Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will ensure flood victims can stay connected while they are at evacuation centres.

“(The) free connectivity at evacuation centres will ensure that those affected can stay in touch with their loved ones, as well as increasing the efficiency of relief and rescue operations,” said U Mobile CEO Wong Heang Tuck.

Won today presented a mock check for the RM3 million donated, to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Ihsan Madani Fundraising Ceremony at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya.

The company’s donation to the Ihsan Fund is its latest initiative after an earlier collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) on a short message service (SMS) flood early warning system.

In July, U Mobile also collaborated with MERCY Malaysia to provide assistance to communities affected by floods in Penampang, Sabah.

The company has previously collaborated with various non-governmental organisations and the Communications Ministry oin flood relief, through cash donations, goods and volunteer efforts by U Mobile staff to help those affected.

Meanwhile, the number of victims in the flood-affected states this morning recorded a decrease to 65,899 people compared to 67,453 people last night.

Kelantan, Pahang and Johor recorded a slight increase in the number of flood victims while three states, namely Terengganu, Perak and Kedah, decreased while Melaka remained the same – December 4, 2024
