Selangor assessment tax to rise 25% starting Jan 1

Local Government exco Datuk Ng Suee Lim says ratepayers will be paying less than the intended tax revision which has not been held for over 20 years

3:46 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The assessment tax rate in Selangor will be increased by 25% and will be enforced on January 1, the state’s Local Government executive councillor Datuk Ng Suee Lim confirmed.

He said the new rate was approved by the state government after taking into account several factors such as the current economic conditions as well as the fact that the last rate hike was in 2019, Bernama reported him saying.

Ng also said property owners will receive up to 75% discounts if the new rate set for their properties is more than 100%.

“Property owners who have not been subjected to (a rate) review for a long time will receive up to 75% discount on the new assessment tax (rate) for an increase that exceeds 100%.

“For example, if the assessment tax rate for an apartment that was paid for this year was RM100 per annum, then the amount of new tax that will be paid in 2025 would be RM125 instead of RM200 that should have been collected by local authorities,” Ng was quoted as saying in a press conference today.

Ng, who is also Sekinchan assemblyman, said that the new assessment tax rate was introduced to ensure a more effective compliance and enforcement in assessment  as well as in Selangor’s public service.

He also said that the rate hike was implemented in accordance with the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171), where a new valuation from the local authority is needed every five years.

Ng also said that the annual rate review was also done in a bid to increase revenue as well, therefore enabling the state government to provide better public service to the people such as public cleanliness and solid waste management. – December 9, 2024
