Corruption scandal: Sabah DAP given full mandate to reassess position in state govt

State chapter gets full authority to reevaluate after last night’s meeting where party’s state chairman gave his full statement amid allegations stemming from viral video involving state leaders

KUALA LUMPUR – The DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) has granted the Sabah DAP leadership full authority to reassess the party’s position in the Sabah state government and take appropriate actions following allegations of corruption implicating senior state leaders

In a press statement issued after a meeting at the DAP Headquarters last night, secretary-general Anthony Loke said that Sabah DAP chairman Phoong Jin Zhe has provided his detailed statement to the CEC on matters related to allegations stemming from videos circulating online, reportedly showing discussions about corrupt activities involving key state assembly members.

Loke also reaffirmed DAP’s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and called on the MACC to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation.   

“DAP does not compromise on corrupt practices within any government administration. We call on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to carry out a decisive investigation and uphold accountability,” said Loke.   

On Monday, the MACC confirmed it is currently investigating the matter, having recorded statements from 15 individuals, including eight Sabah state assembly members and a whistleblower. 

MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said that while interviews were completed last Saturday, the whistleblower has yet to hand over any evidence, citing a need for immunity protection.   

Azam also revealed that the MACC is investigating a second case involving the whistleblower, who has been accused of colluding with a Sabah state government officer in mineral exploration activities. 

The whistleblower previously met MACC officials on October 30, where only a 17-second audio recording was played by their lawyer, purportedly capturing a discussion about sums of money.   

Azam has urged the whistleblower to lodge an official report with the MACC to activate protections under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010, a step deemed crucial for furthering the investigation. – December 11, 2024
