KUALA LUMPUR – The status of Malaysia’s second 5G network rollout is progressing as planned following the takeover of Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) by private telecommunication operators, said the Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
The ministry also confirmed key developments, including the completion of share subscription agreements by major telecommunications companies.
In a reply to a Dewan Negara question, the ministry said that on June 28, 2024, DNB announced that CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, and YTL Communications had finalised agreements to hold shares in DNB. This equity participation is essential for these companies to qualify for the development of the second 5G network.
The response comes after a question from Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim during today’s Dewan Rakyat session, who sought clarification on the status of the second 5G network following DNB’s transition to private ownership.
The ministry also said that he Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) issued an Applicant Information Package on July 1, 2024, to guide service providers in applying for spectrum allocation.
After four months of planning and evaluation, MCMC announced on November 1, 2024, that U Mobile Sdn Bhd has been selected to implement the second 5G network.
MCMC will continue to monitor the rollout to ensure compliance with regulatory standards under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – December 11, 2024
