Kelantan to make halal certification mandatory for all F&B businesses

The new mandatory condition is being implemented by the Kota Bharu council first

3:28 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – All food and beverage operators in Kelantan are now required to obtain the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) before renewing their business licences with local authorities (PBT).

The State Committee for Islamic Development, Dakwah, Information, and Community Relations chairman, Mohd Asri Mat Daud, said this mandatory condition is initially being implemented by the Kota Bharu Municipal Council.

“Insya-ALLAH, other PBTs will also start implementing this in the near future,” he told reporters after officiating the presentation of the Halal Certification to Nasken International Sdn Bhd in Kota Seribong, Pasir Hor in Kelantan, earlier today, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.

However, he did not reveal the timeline for the implementation of the new ruling.

At the time of this writing, it was also unclear whether this ruling involved food businesses belonging to non-Muslims.

He said as of this year, 453 premises and various categories of products in Kelantan have received the Malaysian Halal Certification.

Asri explained that these certifications include food and beverage products, hotel kitchens, eateries, as well as pharmaceutical items. Additionally, the certification has been granted to cosmetic and personal care products, slaughterhouses, contract manufacturing (OEM), and daily-use items.

“According to the data obtained, out of the 453 SPHM certificates issued this year, 48 were for non-Muslim products.”

He encouraged more small-scale entrepreneurs, including home-based businesses, to apply for SPHM to strengthen the halal industry in Kelantan.

“This certification is not limited to food and beverage products alone but also applies to hotel kitchens, beauty centres, and other establishments. SPHM has become a prerequisite in Kelantan for renewing PBT licences related to food and beverage businesses,” he added.

Commenting on the recent revocation of halal certificates for three hotels, Asri said the issue has been resolved.

“All three hotels have reapplied and are currently awaiting approval,” he said. – December 26, 2024
