Why now? Umno questions PAS’s sudden support for Najib

Datuk Ghulam Muzaffar Gulam Mustakim questions PAS’s newfound backing for former prime minister Najib Razak, accusing the party of using the case for political gain ahead of a planned rally on January 6

8:09 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The head of Umno’s Federal Territories Information, Datuk Ghulam Muzaffar Gulam Mustakim, has questioned the sudden support shown by PAS for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

PAS has announced a ‘Solidarity Gathering with Najib Razak Demanding Justice’ rally on January 6.

Speaking to Scoop, Ghulam Muzaffar, who is also the head of the Batu Umno division, said PAS’s actions seem to be using the Najib case for their own political gain.

“I’m not saying I disagree with their (PAS) support, but why now?

“From what’s implied and explicit, they don’t care about Bossku’s (Najib’s) case, but they see this as an opportunity to lobby and gain political advantage from the current situation.

“It’s strange how PAS and Bersatu are releasing statements as if they are the ones fighting for Bossku in his court case. Wasn’t it some of them who were eager to see Bossku imprisoned after the 14th general election?” he said.

Ghulam Muzaffar described the action as that of a ‘latecomer’ trying to take credit for the efforts of Umno, especially its president, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who has been working tirelessly to release an affidavit expressing support for Najib.

“In layman’s terms, they’re trying to steal credit (get praise for someone else’s work)… Politically, they feel they would lose out if they stay away (from the Najib case) because Bossku still holds high political value in the eyes and hearts of the majority of Malaysians.

“Their sincerity is questionable. History has shown that during the Covid-19 crisis, they were the ones who suspended Parliament, killing democracy in our country for the sake of power.

“Now they’re riding on Bossku’s case… enough is enough,” he said.

Earlier, media reports stated that PAS will hold the solidarity rally at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on the day the Court of Appeal hears the former prime minister’s appeal against the High Court’s decision regarding the alleged addendum issued by the previous King.

In a letter dated December 28, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan urged party members to attend the rally “to send a clear signal to the Madani government about the supremacy of the constitution and the rule of law demanded by the people.”

The High Court previously rejected Najib’s judicial review application and motion to submit additional evidence regarding the alleged addendum issued by the previous King concerning house arrest. — December 30, 2024
