QR code trial to clear immigration at KLIA to start this month: home minister

Test-run of potential solution to congestion will use 40 special lanes, manual counters and autogate system still available

6:08 PM MYT

PUTRAJAYA — The government will trial the use of Quick Response (QR) Codes specifically for Malaysian travellers to clear immigration at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 (T1) and KLIA T2 starting this month.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the QR codes will be used in 40 special lanes in the arrivals and departures areas in both terminals, to test run a potential solution to congestion problems.

With the use of QR codes, immigration clearance will take a shorter time of between five to seven seconds, compared to 15 to 25 seconds using the autogate system, Bernama reported him saying.

QR codes can also improve the security and efficiency of services through the use of the latest technology and reduce leakage, he added.

“With a QR code system, travellers no longer need to produce their passports during immigration clearance, but they are required to always carry their passports throughout their journey,” Saifuddin Nasution said.

Manual counter facilities and the conventional auto gate system will still be in use, he added.

In December, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah was reported saying the government was considering the use of a new system using QR codes to speed up checks at immigration counters, especially at KLIA in an effort to reduce congestion.

The system will allow travellers to scan QR codes containing their personal information and travel details. – January 1, 2025.

Why is there a monopoly of rice in Malaysia ? — Remy Majangkim

Before the formation of Malaysia, rice was basically state affairs, but as times went on, the rice industry in Malaysia was hijacked by the federal government as it saw fit and included in a federal act that ultimately disbanded the Sabah Padi Board, paving the way for a capitalist corporation to have a complete monopoly.
