GRS dismisses talk of Warisan joining coalition

Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said there have been no formal discussions or decisions on party’s entry

5:29 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has dismissed suggestions of Parti Warisan joining its coalition, stating that no formal discussions or decisions on the matter have been made.

GRS Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai clarified that any notion of Warisan becoming part of the coalition stemmed from comments by individual leaders rather than representing an official position.

“This is an opinion expressed by some individuals, but it has not been brought to the table for discussion among GRS or Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) leadership,” said Joniston, who also serves as the PBS Information Chief.

“We appreciate the interest in strengthening Sabah’s political framework, but we urge supporters and the public to avoid jumping to conclusions based on individual opinions,” he added.

Joniston’s comments come amid queries from media and supporters, particularly from PBS, seeking clarity on the coalition’s stance following recent statements on the issue.

He reiterated that while GRS supports the idea of uniting local political parties for Sabah’s benefit, any decision must follow proper procedures and formal discussions within the coalition.

The topic of Warisan joining GRS gained traction after Warisan President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal reportedly claimed that GRS had repeatedly declined offers of collaboration ahead of the upcoming state election.

In response, PBS Youth Chief Christopher Mandut suggested that Warisan should formally apply to join GRS, allowing the coalition’s Supreme Council to deliberate on the application.

Mandut also emphasised that greater unity among local parties would be advantageous for Sabah, provided all parties prioritise solidarity over differences. – January 7, 2025
