MACC satisfied with Mahathir sons’ asset declarations, probe continues

Declarations made in compliance, but investigation remains ongoing

PUTRAJAYA — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has expressed satisfaction with the asset declarations submitted by Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir, the sons of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

At a press conference today, MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said, “The investigation primarily concerns Tun Mahathir, but I will address that later.

“As for Tan Sri Mokhzani and Mirzan, both have personally declared their assets to me, as I issued the notices to them directly. They complied fully with the investigation requirements and provided comprehensive details about their assets, including shares.

“I am satisfied with their declarations, although the investigation remains ongoing.”

According to Azam, Mokhzani declared total assets exceeding RM1 billion, with a personal net worth of RM316 million. Mirzan declared assets amounting to RM246.2 million, with a personal value of RM120 million.

Both brothers received notices last year under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009 as part of the investigation into their father.

Scoop previously reported that Mirzan was under investigation for business dealings related to the sale and acquisition of government-linked companies, along with information from the Panama Papers published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2016. Mokhzani’s name did not appear in the Panama Papers.

Additionally, both Mokhzani and Mirzan were investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

In a separate development, Azam confirmed that investigations into the assets of the late former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin and his wife, Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid, are still underway.

“Our investigations have identified overseas assets. However, this poses challenges due to differing laws and jurisdictions in foreign countries,” Azam added. — January 21, 2025
