Cops to call up 13 varsity students who joined Jan 25 anti-graft rally

Himpunan Advokasi Rakyat Malaysia rep says this includes three from Sabah who would have to fly to KL; summoned rallygoers may meet police together on Sunday to receive notice

3:05 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – University students who led and participated in the anti-graft rally outside the Sogo shopping complex here on January 25 have been contacted by the police to come to the station to be issued notices to provide statements.

Yap Xiang, chief media officer of advocacy group Himpunan Advokasi Rakyat Malaysia told Scoop that he was alerted by one of the participants who received a call from the police from the Dang Wangi district headquarters here at around 1pm about the authorities’ intention to serve them with the notice.

“Police are waiting for us to confirm a date where all of us can come to the station together and have the notice issued to us.

“We have suggested Sunday since many (the students) will be having examinations next week,” he said.

He said that 13 people have been contacted by police so far, three of them being in Sabah. Yap also noted that those in Sabah would face difficulties flying to Kuala Lumpur at a short notice. Nevertheless, they have indicated their readiness to cooperate with the police.

The January 25 rally involved over 200 participants, where the majority of them were university students. They marched from Sogo Mall to Dataran Merdeka, chanting slogans to urge the government to take a stronger stance against corruption.

Zaim Zulkifli, the chairman of the rally’s secretariat, said that the group demanded the government implement three key reforms to curb corruption.

The reforms demanded were separating the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) from the Prime Minister’s Office, reiterating calls for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to fall under Parliament’s oversight, and urging the enactment of the Political Financing Act.

It was reportedly that youth wings from parties like PAS, Bersatu and PKR were also present, though they refrained from displaying their logos. – January 31, 2025
