Government to implement 50% toll discount for all festive seasons

New initiative aims to ease financial burden while saving RM180 million annually

6:14 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The government will introduce a 50% toll discount during major festive seasons, replacing the previous practice of offering free tolls.

Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi explained that this move would reduce the government’s financial burden, Bernama reported.

He said the 50% toll discount would save the government approximately RM180 million annually.

“The 50 per cent discount will be applied for eight days a year, just as it was previously,” he said, as quoted by a local daily.

“For Chinese New Year, the 50% discount will be given, as this decision was made in recognition of the continuing need of the people.”

The minister made these remarks after overseeing a site visit for the construction of a pedestrian and motorcycle bridge along Federal Route 5 in Sungai Besar – Sabak Bernam on Tuesday.

“The Cabinet can decide or change its stance as necessary,” he said.

“All the costs for these toll discounts are covered by the government, not the concession companies. I hope the public understands that this 50 per cent toll discount is funded by taxpayers’ money.”

Previously, Alexander had announced that the policy of providing free tolls during all major festivals would no longer be continued starting this year.

However, the Cabinet later decided to offer a 50% toll discount for all Class 1 (private) vehicles during the Chinese New Year celebrations on January 27 and 28, 2025. – February 4, 2025
