KUALA LUMPUR — The Community Communications Department (J-KOM) has a new mandate to strengthen inter-racial relations through its programmes, the Communications Ministry said.

“J-KOM’s functions have been streamlined to strengthen inter-racial relations … to ensure social stability and reduce conflicts that may arise due to different views,” the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply.

The department has a new direction which includes emphasis on inclusivity as part of ensuring effective communication in a diverse, multiracial community, it added.

These changes come with the appointment of J-KOM’s new director-general, effective Jan 15.

This appointment is in line with the Government’s efforts to strengthen the effectiveness of strategic communication and narrative management in delivering government policies, programmes and initiatives to the people,” the ministry said.

PKR’s former senator, Datuk Ismail Yusop, was appointed J-KOM director-general last month.

He was previously deputy director-general of J-KOM and deputy director-general (training) of Akademi Kenegeraan Malaysia (AKM). – February 6, 2025
