Setia City Mall shooter has 11 prior criminal records: Selangor top cop

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have identified the suspect in the recent Setia Alam mall shooting, revealing he has 11 prior criminal records related to drugs and other offences. He is believed to be a local man in his 30s with fair skin. 

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, in a statement, said that the motive remains under investigation but described the incident as isolated. 

The shooting occurred at 10.50pm last night, when officers received reports of gunfire at the mall. Investigations found that the victim, a foreign national working as a cleaner, was attacked while storing equipment on Level P1. 

The suspect fired four shots, striking the victim in the legs and lower back. Despite his injuries, the victim fled into the mall seeking help, while the suspect escaped to Level P2, where he fired multiple rounds at a staircase window and a sliding door before fleeing. 

The suspect then carjacked a Perodua Ativa from a mall visitor at gunpoint, forcing the driver to take him out of Shah Alam. Along the highway, the suspect ordered the driver to stop before escaping on foot. 

Following the incident, seven police reports were filed by eyewitnesses, all of whom have provided statements.

It was previously reported that the victim was brought to Shah Alam Hospital and is in stable condition. Authorities have also reviewed CCTV footage and confirmed the mall is secure. 

Police are intensifying efforts to locate the suspect. The case is being prosecuted under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which carries the death penalty, and Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for a 20-year prison sentence upon conviction.
