Cabinet agrees to review, revise Sosma: Fahmi

Review aims to improve security law alongside Peaceful Assembly Act amendments, says communications minister

7:23 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The Cabinet has agreed to review and revise the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) to improve the law, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also the Unity Government spokesperson, said that the review and improvements to the act will be presented by the Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, in Parliament soon.

“Yesterday, the prime minister announced that the Peaceful Assembly Act will be amended with some simplifications, and in today’s Cabinet meeting, it was agreed that Sosma will also be reviewed and revised.

“The home minister will make a statement on this matter, but in principle, several matters have been discussed and agreed upon to improve or revise Sosma,” he said at the weekly communications minister press conference earlier today.

Yesterday, Saifuddin was reported as saying that the Home Ministry will prepare a memorandum for the Cabinet to expedite the amendment of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (Act 736).

According to Saifuddin, the ministry will also engage with all stakeholders so that the amendment can be tabled in Parliament this year.

Elaborating further, Fahmi informed that the government is also reviewing amendments to improve the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 to facilitate certain matters for bodies or groups that wish to hold peaceful assemblies.

“This is certainly among other things (related to) what happened recently. The government is constantly reviewing laws, and if they need to be improved or can be improved, then this effort will continue,” he said. — February 14, 2025
