MCMC warns against misuse of online platforms as investigations continue across multiple states

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from eight individuals for allegedly uploading false and offensive content concerning the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Conference of Rulers.

In a statement, MCMC said the content in question could cause public confusion and anxiety, while also inciting hatred and ridicule towards the monarchy, particularly the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Council of Rulers.

Following reports received, MCMC’s investigation team initiated a probe under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).

“The statements of eight individuals were recorded across six states: Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and Pahang,” the statement read.

As part of the operation, authorities confiscated eight smartphones and SIM cards linked to the case to facilitate the investigation.

“Forensic analysis will be conducted on the seized devices to gather evidence,” MCMC added.

The investigation falls under the provisions of Act 588 (prior to amendments), which carries a maximum penalty of a RM50,000 fine, a one-year jail term, or both upon conviction.

The commission reminded the public to exercise responsibility when posting content on social media and internet messaging services. It also warned against using online platforms to disseminate false or hateful material, which contravenes the cultural and ethical values of Malaysia’s diverse society.

Separately, on February 11, six individuals were placed under investigation for allegedly posting false and offensive content regarding the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Council of Rulers on Facebook.

MCMC said that an inspection operation was conducted in Setapak, where one suspect had uploaded misleading information related to the Council of Rulers’ meeting.

“A smartphone and a SIM card associated with the case were confiscated to aid in the investigation. Forensic analysis will be carried out on the device to collect evidence,” it said.

Additionally, MCMC has issued notices to two other individuals, requiring them to explain their social media posts.

“A comprehensive investigation will be conducted before the case is referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action. The probe is being carried out under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which prescribes a maximum fine,” it added.

Inspection operations related to other cases were carried out throughout the week in locations such as Sungai Petani, Kota Bharu, Kerian, and Teluk Intan. – February 15, 2025
