Setia City Mall shooting suspect dead in Pulau Ketam shootout: police

Selangor top cop confirms man with nine criminal records died at hotel during police manhunt, two loaded firearms recovered

8:51 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The suspect believed to be linked to the recent shooting at Setia City Mall has been shot dead by police in an operation at a hotel in Pulau Ketam. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the shooting occurred at about 3am today.

Officers from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, working alongside the Selangor Criminal Investigation Department, tracked the suspect to the hotel as part of their ongoing manhunt.

“During the raid, a shootout ensued between the suspect and police inside a hotel room. The suspect, a local man believed to be in his mid-30s, was fatally shot,” said Datuk Hussein Omar Khan in a statement.

“Officers recovered two loaded firearms at the scene.”

The deceased had a history of violent crime, with nine previous criminal records, including seven cases of armed robbery and one drug-related offence. Police also believe he was involved in the Setia City Mall shooting incident that took place earlier this month.

In the mall shooting incident, which occurred at about 10.50pm on February 8, the suspect shot a foreign national working as a cleaner inside the mall. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the legs and lower back but managed to escape and seek help. The suspect then fired multiple rounds at a staircase window and a sliding door before fleeing the scene.

He later hijacked a Perodua Ativa at gunpoint from a mall visitor, forcing the driver to take him out of Shah Alam before escaping on foot.

Authorities had been intensifying efforts to track the suspect, urging members of the public to provide any relevant information. The case was being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which carries the death penalty, and Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for a 20-year prison sentence upon conviction.

Police have assured the public that the situation is now under control and the threat posed by the suspect has been neutralised. Further investigations are ongoing. – February 18, 2025
