MACC to call prominent personalities in probe against Ismail Sabri’s ex-aides

They will be questioned as witnesses, chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said

6:34 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will summon prominent individuals as part of its probe in the millions of ringgit found in the home of a former senior aide to ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said several more people will be called for their statements, including prominent figures who will be questioned as witnesses, Berita Harian reported him saying.

This follows the arrest of four of Ismail Sabri’s former aides and seizure of RM100 million in cash from a house belonging to one of them.

Azam said several more people need to be questioned as the investigation is still ongoing.

However, he declined to elaborate to Berita Harian when asked about the prominent individuals to be summoned.

Azam previously confirmed to Scoop that the probe concerns corruption and money laundering.

Media reports had earlier said the investigation was related to an alleged RM700 million in government funds for promotional and publicity purposes.

A source close to MACC however, subsequently told the media that RM100 million had been seized in a raid at one of the homes of Ismail Sabri’s former aides.

The cash was stored in several bags and safes in a room in the residence. Also confiscated during the raid were documents, jewellery and electronic devices.

Investigators will now focus on tracing the source of funds, including for possible links to political financing, as well as the role of the aide in handling the seized cash.

Ismail Sabri, who was the country’s ninth prime minister and served from August 21, 2021 to November 24, 2022, was hospitalised last Saturday after collapsing at home. Though now stable and conscious, he is still under monitoring at a hospital in Damansara. – February 24, 2025
