5 men fined RM2,000 each for assault on man with disabilities at Kemaman market

All five pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt but a sixth man claimed trial

KUALA TERENGGANU — Five men who assaulted a person with disabilities at Pasar Tani Padang Astana Chukai, Kemaman, in January have each been fined RM2,000.

Kemaman District police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli, said the penalty was imposed after they pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code at the Kemaman Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The RM2,000 fine per individual is the maximum fine under Section 323.

A sixth person, however, pleaded not guilty and will face trial, Razi said in a press statement today, Bernama reports.

Razi advised the public to exercise caution when taking any action in public spaces.

“Police appreciate the public’s cooperation in providing information to assist with the case,” he said.

On Jan 17, Ahmad Nor Al Faizan Jusoh, 47, was assaulted at the market by several men after he allegedly rode his motorcycle into one of the stalls by accident.

A 1-minute-52-second video of the assault went viral on social media, showing other men kicking him and throwing food at him before dragging him on the ground at the market.

Throughout the video, Ahmad Nor can be seen and heard repeatedly apologising.

A friend of the victim told Scoop Ahmad Nor had been an exemplary student in his youth and a top hockey player in the state, but suffered mental health issues after leaving school.

Police said investigations revealed that the incident occurred after Ahmad Nor accidentally collided with a stall, causing the vendor’s food items to fall.

The assault on the disabled individual drew widespread attention, including from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, both of whom sent representatives to visit the victim and his family. – February 26, 2025
