AirAsia to relocate Subang Airport operations to KLIA2 from April

The move aims to optimise operations amid growing passenger demand, with a transition plan in place for Hari Raya travellers

11:02 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – AirAsia will relocate its domestic operations from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA2), effective April 7.

In a statement today, the low-cost airline said the move is aimed at optimising operations amid growing demand while enhancing the overall passenger experience.

“Subang Airport has been a convenient option, particularly for city-bound travellers, but its redevelopment to support future growth will take time.

“In the meantime, we will consolidate operations at KLIA2 to improve efficiency and elevate the passenger experience,” it said.

AirAsia also noted that passenger traffic between Kuala Lumpur and key destinations such as Kota Kinabalu and Kuching has grown by 16% year-on-year. Moving operations to KLIA2 will allow the airline to better accommodate this rising demand.

AirAsia Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra said KLIA2’s infrastructure offers the scale and capacity needed to support connectivity, especially during peak travel periods.

“It provides the capacity required for continued growth as we increase flights to meet rising demand across East Malaysia routes,” he said.

To ensure a smooth transition, the airline will continue operating from Subang Airport through the busy Hari Raya travel period, allowing most holiday travellers to benefit from its convenience before the relocation.

“Our positive consultation with the Gateway Development Alliance (GDA) consortium ensures that this transition aligns with broader infrastructure plans and long-term connectivity goals,” he added.

AirAsia began operating at Subang Airport on August 30, 2024, with routes to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. — March 6, 2025
