Only the secretary-general calls the shots in DAP: Guan Eng

He urges party members to stay united in defending its ideals and principles, saying this would make DAP unbeatable.

SHAH ALAM – DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has reaffirmed that only the party’s secretary-general determines its direction, as party members vote today for new leadership for the 2025-2028 term.

“There is only one main leader in DAP, which is its secretary-general who will decide the party’s directions,” Lim said in a brief speech at DAP’s 18th National Congress at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) here, addressing 4,203 delegates.

His remarks follow reports of party leaders and grassroots members urging him to step aside as chairman to make way for fresh leadership.

On Thursday, Penang-based DAP veteran Datuk AR Krishnan and four other voting delegates from the state called for Lim to withdraw from the contest, warning that the party risked becoming a “one-man” organisation.

Similar concerns were raised by former Klang MP Charles Santiago, who reportedly said Lim’s actions had “sometimes overshadowed” those of the secretary-general, currently Anthony Loke, fuelling dissatisfaction among members.

Winning and losing part of party contests

In his speech, Lim acknowledged that today’s convention has garnered vast media attention due to the fact that a new batch of leaders will be appointed following the election process held for the occupants of the 30-man Central Executive Committee (CEC) – which he is also contesting in.

The Bagan MP also pointed out that winning or losing is normal in any party contest and leaders must place their faith in the wisdom of the delegates that will decide on their fate. He also highlighted that the party’s success is attributed to its bravery to do the right thing.

“The DAP is a party that not only does the right thing, but also does it right. It’s not just about doing the right thing, but also doing it the right way.

“We are here today because of our unquenchable fighting spirit. And that is what makes DAP unique,” he added.

The former Penang chief minister also reminded party members that as long as they are united in upholding DAP’s ideals and principles, the party would never be defeated by its opponents.

“We are in the government now, but remember, we must not forget to fight for the voters who have placed their faith in us.

“…and it will not be easy all the time. But for DAP, we (must) remember this: when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. DAP is a party that never gives up, and never gives in,” he stressed.

Honour promises made to supporters

Additionally, Lim, who also formerly served as a finance minister in the first Pakatan Harapan administration, hopes that economic reforms would be considered and expedited to be delivered this year by the Madani government to reciprocate the deeds of PH voters who placed their trust in the coalition

“This would make Malaysia a better place for our children,” he added. – March 16, 2025.
