SHAH ALAM – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has criticised the opposition for what he described as a “desperate” attempt to stir racial sentiments and instil public unease.

He asserted that such tactics, which prioritise racial issues over constructive debates on government policies, are outdated and misleading.

Anwar, who is also the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said the opposition’s rhetoric does not reflect the actual state of affairs in the country.

“There are no scandals involving national leaders… no corruption or abuse of power. Instead, they exploit racial issues, claiming the government is weak because it allegedly bows to party influence, particularly DAP.

“Do they not know DAP? Of course, they do. PAS worked alongside DAP in Pakatan Rakyat for nearly 15 years. When PH was led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, those now in Bersatu also sat at the same table with DAP leaders.

“Are their claims true? No. Their statements are simply the words of desperate individuals – the ‘desperado’ of politics,” he said when officiating 18th DAP National Congress here today.

Also present were DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, United Kinabalu Progressive Organisation (UPKO) president Datuk Ewon Benedick, and DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang.

Anwar further accused the opposition of relying on outdated fear-mongering tactics to unsettle the Malay community.

“There is no policy critique or fresh perspectives. Instead, they keep beating the same old drum, trying to frighten the Malay community by painting the rise of the Chinese, particularly those represented by DAP, as a threat.

“I will not be apologetic or defensive. What matters is for everyone to hear this—if we are to elevate our nation and strengthen governance, we need the participation of all ethnic groups.

“This country must not follow the path of others but must stand firm on the right foundation,” he said. – March 16, 2025
