KUALA LUMPUR – The name Masjid Madani was chosen by the Jakel Group as a tribute to the current government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Jakel Group managing director Datuk Seri Mohamed Faroz Mohamed Jakel said that although several names were initially proposed, his family ultimately decided on Masjid Madani.

He explained that they had initially considered several names, including Masjid Jakel or the names of Prophet Muhammad’s companions, and the prime minister had agreed to those names.

“When we presented the mosque construction plans to the prime minister, he asked whether a name had been finalised.

“I told him that my siblings and I had discussed and considered several names, including Masjid Jakel or the names of the prophet’s companions as a mark of respect.

“The prime minister agreed, but when we returned home and discussed it further as a family, we unanimously decided on Masjid Madani. We see it as a tribute to the government’s efforts today under Anwar’s leadership in building a fairer, more civilised society that cares for all,” he said.

He made these remarks while speaking at the Masjid Madani Groundbreaking Ceremony at Jalan Munshi Abdullah today.

The event was officiated by the prime minister.

The four-storey mosque, covering 12,142 sqft, will feature facilities such as a library, conference hall, and an arts and culture space to introduce Islam to the public.

Masjid Madani will accommodate approximately 2,900 worshippers at any given time, including 592 in the main prayer hall on the first floor.

According to Faroz, the construction of Masjid Madani is not intended to replace Masjid India or the IPD Dang Wangi surau, but rather to address the pressing needs of the area.

He also shared that the mosque’s construction was the wish of the late Mohamed Jakel Ahmad, taking into account the needs of the local community, who face severe overcrowding at nearby mosques, especially on Fridays and during festive seasons.

“The establishment of this mosque will not only benefit the Muslim community in the area but also contribute to the overall well-being of society by providing a comfortable and well-organised place of worship,” he said in his speech at the event. – March 27, 2025
