Controversial preacher Zamri Vinoth remanded for two days: IGP

Order was issued by Kangar court after he was arrested last night over an allegedly seditious post

KUALA LUMPUR – Independent preacher Zamri Vinoth has been remanded for two days starting today to assist in the probe related to his Facebook posting that allegedly insulted religion and disturbed public order, according to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain. 

Razarudin said that the 41-year-old man was detained for facilitating further investigation under Section 4(1) of Sedition Act 1948  and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Berita Harian reported. 

“The remand order was issued by magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor at the Kangar court, Perlis around 9.30am today,” he was reported as saying.

Yesterday, it was reported that Zamri was arrested in Kangar, Perlis.

The arrest was made over a Facebook post related to the relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple. 

Razarudiin reportedly said that Zamri’s smartphone was seized during the arrest, and that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will also take further action regarding Zamri Vinoth’s Facebook account.

On March 20, media reported that discussions on relocating the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple – situated on land owned by Jakel Group – were proceeding harmoniously between the company, temple management, and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

On Tuesday, the temple committee confirmed that an agreement had been reached with DBKL to move to a nearby site measuring 4,000 square feet. – March 28, 2025
