SUBANG JAYA – The development project at the site of the Putra Heights gas pipeline inferno yesterday was given planning approval by the Subang Jaya City Council (MPSJ) in 2022, the council’s mayor said, as police begin investigations into the contractor responsible.
Subang Jaya Mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim confirmed the project’s legitimacy, adding that it was not located within the reserve land or right of way (ROW) for Petronas.
The project was given planning approval in 2022, and also received permission from Petronas to use its ROW for sewerage facilities.
“The project went through the required processes, including obtaining approval from Petronas to use the ROW for Indah Water Konsortium (IWK).
“The contractor involved is also on the panel approved by IWK and Petronas,” Amirul Azizan said at the Incident Control Post here today.
He said MPSJ would not make any official comments in response to numerous posts on social media speculating that excavation work for a project at the gas pipeline reserve land had caused the massive fire yesterday.
The matter is currently being investigated by Petronas, the police and other authorities, the mayor said.
He added that the project was slated for completion last December but as of then, had not obtained its Certificate of Completion and Compliance.
Amirul Azizan said he was not sure about the reason for the delay but added: “The project fulfilled all conditions and regulation set by the authorities”.
Meanwhile, Subang Jaya police chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said the contractor who did the development work will be summoned.
Police are still in the process of identifying and verifying various parties, and confirming their involvement in the development project.
“Further action will be taken once the investigation is complete, including consulting local authorities and Petronas to verify if a work permit was issued,” Bernama reported him saying at at the Incident Control Post.
Police have so far focused on recording statements from fire victims either at hospital where some are receiving treatment, or at temporary relief centres.
On the ground situation, Wan Azlan said there are still small fires burning in several of the affected houses.
To manage the situation, the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has deployed a fire engine with six personnel to continue monitoring the area in case of further fires.
“JBPM will conduct a thorough assessment of the damage to the affected homes and remain on standby, as there may be embers in the affected houses that could reignite the fire. We are working to ensure the fire does not spread to other homes,” he said.
At the moment, only residents from the less affected areas are allowed to return to retrieve their essentials and important documents, with police escort.
“Residents in the more severely affected areas are asked to remain patient. We will provide updates as the situation progresses,” he said, adding that police are ensuring 24-hour security and monitoring of the area affected.
Wan Azlan also said that Petronas has informed that no gas has been detected in the pipeline involved as of 7 am today. – April 2, 2025
