SUBANG JAYA – Initial investigations by the police have confirmed that excavation work was being carried out to replace sewage pipes approximately 30m from the site of the explosion in Putra Heights.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said police have identified the developer, contractor, subcontractor, and workers involved in the sewage pipe replacement works in the area.
“Police investigations have determined the direction of the case, and earthworks were conducted in that vicinity.
“We can confirm that excavation activity took place before the explosion incident, specifically to replace sewage pipes located less than 30m from the blast centre.
“The authorities have identified the parties involved, including the developer, contractor, subcontractor, and workers who operated two machines – a backhoe and an excavator – for the digging works.
“These works were halted on March 30. Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the machines, the excavator, was also found to have sunk into the hole following the explosion,” he said during a press conference here today.
He added that further investigation is needed to determine whether the excavation activity may have caused the explosion.
“We still need time to investigate this matter thoroughly.
“While we can confirm that excavation works were ongoing before the incident, the depth and extent of the digging are still under investigation, as well as whether this activity directly caused the explosion,” he said.
So far, police have recorded statements from 56 witnesses, including victims present at the scene, contractors, and workers in the area.
“We have identified one witness who was in the vicinity when the explosion occurred.
“A security guard stationed at a newly constructed shoplot building was present at the time and was also injured. Police are currently gathering information and a statement from this witness,” he added.
According to Hussein, police have opened an investigation to determine if there are any criminal elements involved, including sabotage and negligence.
Police also stated that they will be calling upon anyone for information to ascertain if there are any criminal aspects to the incident.
“The large explosion caused the ground to become unstable, so this needs to be stabilised first.
“The Public Works Department (PWD) requires two weeks to produce an initial report and another two weeks for a final report.
“During these two weeks, we will first stabilise the ground in the area of the explosion, and we will begin excavating on Apr 15,” he said.
He also informed that, so far, no casualties have been reported as a result of the incident, based on investigations by the Marine Force, Canine Detection Unit (K9), and Forensic Investigation Unit who have surveyed and inspected the nearby river and the surrounding area.
At the same time, Hussein said that they have received 20 dashcam recordings from social media and witnesses of the incident to assist with the investigation.
“From these videos, we have identified witnesses to the incident and investigations are ongoing to assist with the investigation,” he said. — April 4, 2025
