KUALA LUMPUR — The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) is appealing for swift approval from the authorities for alternative plans by industries affected by the Putra Heights gas fire to obtain temporary gas supply for their operations.
FMM said around 200 industrial firms who rely on a steady supply of gas for their operations are affected by the April 1 blaze and face a potential halt to production until gas supply is restored on April 20.
That would be three nearly weeks without supply, affecting businesses’ financials, their supply chains, as well as exports and employment, Soh said in remarks to Scoop.
“The extended length of the supply disruption is causing significant operational and business continuity challenges for industries in the affected areas,” he said.
Industries are now trying to put in place interim solutions such as finding alternative gas supply, including transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) by tanker lorries.
“Considering it is an emergency, (we hope) the authorities can assist and approve such arrangements promptly to minimise the impact of gas supply disruption to the affected industries,” Soh said, adding that FMM is ready to cooperate with the authorities on obtaining approvals for alternative arrangements.
Soh added that the incident was bad for investor confidence given that the Klang Valley, where Putra Heights is located, is home to many multinational companies and large industries.
Among the industries affected is The Italian Baker Sdn Bhd which produces sliced bread under the Massimo brand name.
It said in a statement two days ago that its production had been temporarily affected because of the gas pipe fire which disrupted LNG supply to its factory. As such, supply of its baked products at local supermarkets would be affected for the time being, and buyers with queries are to contact the company’s customer service line at 1800-22-6688.
The fire involved a Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights which ignited at 8.10 am on April 1, and lasted about eight hours until it was extinguished at 3.4pm. The explosion left a 10-m deep crater and damaged over 200 homes, displacing over 1,000 people. 87 homes have been declared a “total loss” and deemed unfit for occupation. – April 5, 2025
