MRSM bullying: All perpetrators identified, says cops — MARA warns of firm action

Incident involving seven students took place mid-2024, with police confirming no report was lodged despite a viral video of the bullying

7:41 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — A bullying incident at a Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Seberai Perai Selatan took place in the middle of last year, involving seven students, including the 15-year-old victim.

According to SPS Deputy Police Chief, Mohd Norazmi Abd Ghapar, investigations were carried out under Section 323 of the Penal Code, with statements recorded from all involved.

“All those involved have been identified, and the cause of the incident was that they were merely joking and teasing each other,” he said, as reported by Bernama.

Earlier, a video went viral on social media showing a group of male students piling on the head and body of another student, who was lying face down on a bed.

The 1-minute-31-second clip also showed the victim being whipped on the buttocks with a belt.

Norazmi added that no police report had been lodged over the incident, but an investigation was initiated following the circulation of the video.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, said the students involved in the MRSM bullying incident must be suspended from school.

He said this was necessary to ensure the students did not interfere with the investigation process and to send a clear message that Mara does not tolerate such behaviour.

“I have received the full investigation report after instructing the Mara management and Secondary Education Division to carry out a detailed probe into the viral video.

“If it is found that the bullying did occur and the students are guilty, we at the Mara and MRSM level will take firm action and will not compromise in any way,” he said in a short video uploaded to Facebook today.

Earlier, Asyraf stated that stern action would be taken if it were confirmed that the students involved in the bullying case were indeed MRSM students.

He stressed that there is no place for bullies or for normalising bullying in any form at MRSM.

“I’ve asked my officers to investigate immediately if this incident truly took place at an MRSM. If it’s confirmed the students are from MRSM, there will be no further compromise — firm action will definitely be taken.

“I’ve said it many times since being entrusted with overseeing Mara: ‘You touch, you go!’” he said. — April 7, 2025
