KUALA LUMPUR — Flash floods in several major residential areas in Shah Alam this morning after hours of continuous heavy rain show that existing mitigating systems are not functioning, said Kota Kemuning assemblyman Preakas Sampunathan.
The affected areas include Taman Sri Muda, Taman Desa Kemuning, Kampung Bukit Lanchung, Bukit Kemuning and Kampung Lanchung Jaya, whose residents have had to endure repeated flooding over the years despite promises of flood mitigating infrastructure.
In a statement he said although heavy rain began at midnight, the water pumps serving those areas were only activated at 3am.
“(Today’s) flood proves that this issue is no longer limited to Taman Sri Muda, but has even spread to several parks and other areas in the Kota Kemuning constituency.
“This indicates that the existing mitigation systems, including the installation of pumps and drainage, are insufficient or not functioning as well as they could,” he said.
“Despite the actions taken, flooding incidents continue to occur. This is clear evidence that the existing system is inadequate.
“Incidents like this clearly show that the maintenance and monitoring of contractor work needs to be tightened, and the capacity of the system needs to be improved.”
Preakas urged Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to intervene directly, especially since the state government had invested heavily in flood mitigation projects.
This morning, two temporary relief centres were opened at Dewan Kenanga under the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) in Section 28, and at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 16 following early morning downpours.
Flooding was also reported in Kg Padang Jawa in Shah Alam and parts of Kajang this morning.
Residents have also been advised to remain vigilant and monitor water levels in their residential areas.
The Batu 3 Lama road, which was temporarily closed due to flooding, was reopened as the floodwaters receded.
The floods this morning also affected residents in Kg Tengah, Puchong, who had been affected by the Putra Heights gas pipeline fire earlier this month.
Bernama also reported that some residents of Kg Kuala Sungai Baru, which was affected by the gas pipeline fire, had to move back to temporary relief shelters a second time in a month due to this morning’s floods.
“I haven’t even had time to get over the fire and now we have been hit by floods,” said Mohd Kamalzaman Pauzi, 39, whose house is about 100 metre from the river which swelled and flooded the village after this morning’s continuous rain. – April 11, 2025
