ERL beefs up security after cable theft incidents

KUALA LUMPUR — Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) has enhanced its security measures following a series of cable thefts that crippled its KLIA Transit and KLIA Express rail services five days ago.

“Following the recent incidents of cable theft, ERL have immediately enhanced security measures of the affected areas. 

“This includes deploying additional personnel to hotspot areas, increasing patrol frequency, and intensifying surveillance around critical infrastructure,” ERL CEO Datin Noormah Mohd Noor said in a statement.

The cable theft occurred on April 8 and 9 in four incidents within a 24-hour span at points along the track which an ERL spokesperson said was due to “loopholes” in the security system that vandals managed to “exploit”.

ERL, however, acted swiftly for passengers by providing shuttle bus services between the Putrajaya & Cyberjaya and Salak Tinggi stations during the incident period, Noormah added.

She reminded passengers affected by the service disruption who required refunds to contact customer service at CustomerEnquiry@KLIAekspres.com.

Noormah also thanked police for their swift investigation and arrest of suspects.

“We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to PDRM for their quick and effective action. Their professionalism and dedication have helped ensure that justice is served, and that the public can continue to have confidence in the safety of our services,” she said.

Police on April 12 confirmed the arrest of three local men on suspicion of the cable theft incidents near Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi and Dengkil.

The three suspects, aged between 25 and 50, have prior criminal records.

However, police also believe a larger group is involved and are investigating the theft under Sections 379 and 447 of the Penal Code, for theft and criminal trespass, respectively. – April 14, 2025
