KUALA LUMPUR – The uncertain fate of 193 Menara KL staff has been secured, as they will be re-employed under the new management, LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd (LSHSM).
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that based on available information, all affected employees had their services terminated by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB) on March 31, which coincided with the first day of Syawal, Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
“Based on the information received, 205 MKLSB employees had their services terminated on March 31, with notice given on December 18 last year.
“The Communications Ministry requested that the new company absorb all these workers, as many of them have served for a long time and are familiar with the building’s operations.
“So, the new company (LSHSM) offered them employment on the condition that their salaries are not lower than what they received with the previous employer,” he said during a press conference following a media briefing by the Communications Ministry on the takeover of the KL Tower concession management held here today.
Fahmi said the KL Tower is currently closed temporarily to resolve several issues, including concerns about visitor safety.
“Operations and management of the KL Tower under LSHSM officially began on April 1, but the previous company (MKLSB) refused to vacate.
“On April 3, the Federal Lands Commissioner (PTP) issued an eviction notice to MKLSB under Section 425 of the National Land Code 1965 [Act 828].
“PTP entered the premises to facilitate the entry of the new company. Several urgent matters need to be addressed after the former company completes the removal of its assets and equipment.
“In addition, the new company must ensure that visitor safety is prioritised. Based on feedback from LSHSM, including on repair and maintenance works, we will announce the reopening date for KL Tower in due course,” he said.
Elaborating further, Fahmi, who is also the spokesperson for the Unity Government, said the Communications Ministry team had conducted site visits to assess the current condition of the tower and ensure safety measures are in place when it reopens.
“Based on the team’s observation videos, many kitchen appliances and the condition of the revolving tower – which houses a restaurant – were not in a state fit for visitors.
“There were also railings on the deck that had been dismantled, which is quite concerning. So, for the safety of visitors, the new company must carry out repair and renovation works immediately,” he said.
The KL Tower will be temporarily closed starting today to allow the new management to carry out maintenance and upgrading works for visitor safety and comfort.
In a statement released yesterday, the Communications Ministry said the reopening date of the iconic communications tower – one of the tallest in the world – will be announced through various media channels.
The Madani Government, through the Communications Ministry, reaffirmed that Menara Kuala Lumpur is government-owned.
According to the statement, MKLSB’s occupation of the Menara KL site after March 31 is considered illegal.
As such, the Federal Lands Commissioner issued two eviction notices to MKLSB via letters dated April 3 and 9. – April 17, 2025
