KUALA LUMPUR — Courier company DHL has suspended deliveries of shipments valued over US$800 to private customers in the US effective today (April 21).
The company cited new customs rules introduced under US President Donald Trump’s higher tariffs which have lengthened clearance times, Reuters reports.
Updated US customs regulations which now require formal entry processing for shipments exceeding US$800, have now significantly increased red tape and caused “multi-day delays” in deliveries, it said.
DHL in a notice on its website said the suspension is “until further notice”.
However, the move only applies to business-to-consumer shipments, and will not affect business-to-business shipments exceeding US$800.
DHL warned that business-to-business shipment may still face delays.
New US customs rules which were enacted on April 5 have lowered the threshold for package entry with minimal paperwork from US$2,500 to US$800. As a result, more formal processing is required for goods above the new value limit.
Last week, Hong Kong’s postal service suspended mail services for goods shipped by sea to the US, citing the Trump administration’s bullying tactics which cancelled the de minimis exception on small packages worth less than US$800 posted to the US from China and Hong Kong. – April 21, 2025
