Best results since 2013: SPM 2024 shows improvement across the board

14,179 students scored straight A’s, significantly increasing from 11,713 last year and highest number in over a decade

KUALA LUMPUR – The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 results have been hailed as the best in over a decade, with improvements recorded across nearly all key indicators – from national grade averages to subject performances to attendance.

“This is the best SPM result since 2013, when the government introduced the mandatory pass requirement for Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah,” said Education Director-General Datuk Azman Adnan.

The National Average Grade (Gred Purata Kebangsaan, GPK) improved to 4.49, compared to 4.60 in 2023, continuing a positive trend over recent years (2022: 4.74; 2021: 4.86). A lower GPK indicates better performance.

Among the standout figures: 14,179 students scored straight A’s (A+, A, and A-) in all subjects – the highest number in 11 years and a significant jump from 11,713 in 2023.

“The overall performance of SPM 2024 candidates is very encouraging,” Azman said at a press conference today.

“It reflects consistent progress, and we are especially proud of this cohort’s achievements.”

Also on the rise was the number of students obtaining at least a credit (Grade C) in all subjects, which climbed to 86,040 from 83,112 in the previous year.

SPM 2024 saw more candidates as well, with 402,918 registrations – a 1.7% increase from 2023. Of these, 386,714 were new candidates taking a minimum of six subjects, and the majority (344,919) were from public schools.

There was also a notable reduction in exam absenteeism, with the number of students who did not sit for the exam falling from 8,676 in 2023 to 6,246 last year.

Urban and rural candidates alike showed improvement, with the urban GPK improving by 0.11 points and rural GPK by 0.09. The performance gap between the two groups remains minimal, now standing at just 0.02 points.

In terms of subject performance, 59 out of 95 subjects showed improvement, while 30 declined slightly, one remained unchanged, and five were new subjects introduced last year.

English showed the largest performance gain among core subjects, with a 0.19-point improvement, while Bahasa Melayu recorded the best overall subject grade (GPMP) at 3.72.

Among the seven core subjects, only Pendidikan Moral showed a slight dip, decreasing by just 0.07 points – a drop deemed insignificant by the ministry.

The ministry credited these achievements to continuous efforts in strengthening education delivery and curriculum effectiveness, as well as the resilience of students and teachers in adapting post-pandemic. – April 24, 2025
