KL Tower reopens to public tomorrow after nine-day closure

Communications Ministry announces this after landmark was closed from April 17 for maintenance, restoration works

12:17 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower) will reopen to the public tomorrow at 9am, after it was closed for over a week for major maintenance and restoration works.

The Communications Ministry confirmed the reopening today, saying it reflects the government’s commitment to public safety and worker welfare.

“The Madani government is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for visitors, while also ensuring the well-being of workers involved,” the ministry said in a statement.

The tower’s new operator, LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd (LSHSM), was awarded a 20-year concession beginning April 1 to manage and revitalise the iconic landmark.

LSHSM chief executive officer Khairil Faizal Othman said yesterday that the tower, which typically attracts 1,000 to 1,500 visitors daily – mostly foreign tourists – had to suspend operations during the closure due to the works and to ensure public safety.

However, he assured the repair works were being expedited as the closure also impacts tourism.

Restoration works included deep cleaning, repainting, drainage and electrical upgrades, and refurbishment of the revolving restaurant, along with the reinstallation of safety features such as CCTV systems and railings.

The reopening follows a Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) completed on April 21, which flagged key areas requiring urgent attention to meet international safety standards.

“Our priority is to ensure a smooth and unhindered reopening while providing visitors with a world-class experience,” Khairil said.

KL Tower was officially closed on April 17, shortly after the termination of the previous concession held by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB). Despite the contract ending on March 31, MKLSB continued occupying the premises, prompting the Federal Lands Commissioner to issue eviction notices on April 3 and 9.

The government has clarified that the change involves only a shift in management, with the tower remaining fully under government ownership.

On the same day the closure began, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that 193 out of 205 staff who were let go by MKLSB had been offered reemployment under LSHSM, with assurances that their salaries would remain unchanged. – April 25, 2025
