GEORGE TOWN – Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has made sizable progress in its water supply projects, having completed 19 out of 23 planned initiatives during the scheduled water supply interruption (SWSI), which began last night. – representing 85% of the overall progress. The corporation aims to finish all projects by 4pm today.
The SWSI, which commenced at 10pm yesterday, is expected to conclude at 10am on Monday.
In a statement, PBAPP’s chief executive officer, Datuk Ir K. Pathmanathan, provided an update on the status of the remaining four projects.
As of 10.30am, the final connection works for the Sungai Perai River-Crossing Pipe (SP-RCP) in Ampang Jajar, Butterworth, were 46% complete.
Similarly, the final connection works for the SP-RCP in Kampung Teluk, Northern Seberang Perai, had reached 30%, while valve replacement works on a pipeline near the Sungai Dua water treatment plant (WTP) in Tasek Gelugor had progressed to 90%.
Meanwhile, diversion works for a section of a pipeline at Kompleks Majlis Sukan Negeri in Batu Uban, Southwest District on Penang Island, were 95% complete.
“Generally, PBAPP would like to report that all water supply projects are progressing well. We expect all work to be completed by 4 pm,” said Pathmanathan.
He added, “As soon as these projects have been commissioned, PBAPP will proceed with restoring the water supply by schedule.”
According to PBAPP’s supply recovery timeline, 40% of the water supply is expected to be restored by 10 pm today, benefiting 136,683 of the 341,708 affected consumers across the Northern Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai, and Northeast District on the island.
A recovery rate of 88% is anticipated by 10pm tomorrow, restoring water to 300,185 affected consumers, including those in Southern Seberang Perai and Southwest District.
Full recovery is expected in all five affected districts by 10am on Monday, including the remaining 41,523 consumers in the end-of-line and highland residential areas in Southern Seberang Perai and Southwest District.
The SWSI is part of efforts to enhance water pumping capacity and efficiency at the Sungai Dua WTP, a move that is set to benefit 465,000 consumers – roughly 66% of PBAPP’s total customer base of 705,528 in the state.
This follows the launch of the 114 million litres per day (MLD) Package 12A at the Sungai Dua WTP, which will significantly increase treated water production. – April 26, 2025
