Fire breaks out at SMK Tinggi Setapak dorm block which houses 91 students

All students were at school surau when fire happened and no one was trapped or injured

KUALA LUMPUR – A dormitory block at SMK Tinggi Setapak, which houses 91 male students, caught on fire last night.  

Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Japari Tajuddin confirmed this in a statement. He said that all students were in the school’s surau, awaiting the Isyak prayer when the fire broke out.

The blaze, which engulfed the first floor of the dorm and caused 80% damages was brought under control by 9.40pm. Nobody was reported injured, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. 

According to Bernama, a parent show lives nearby, Muzelysham Mustafa, said his son alerted him to the fire after hearing the alarm, prompting him to check the dormitory.  

Upon arriving, he found the dormitory empty, reassuring him that no students were trapped inside.  

Other parents started to arrive at the school to pick up their children as soon as they were notified. – April 30, 2025
