We need funds too: Peja debunks talks of Perikatan backing Muda for state polls

Muda says it has limited resources, which is why it can only field candidates for 10% of the contested state seats

12:32 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu number two Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu has denied speculations that independent party Muda are receiving funds from Perikatan Nasional (PN) for the coming state polls.

Instead, Faizal told Scoop the coalition itself is going through a rough patch amid preparations for the polls in six states, and is not in a position to financially aid other parties.

“We are struggling ourselves, How (do we) fund Muda?

“Maybe I should ask Muda to help us in funding our campaign activities (instead),” he quipped.

This came in light of talks which alleged that the youth-based party was receiving funds from external sources to split votes, and implied that PN was behind this.

Similarly, Muda also refuted speculations over its funding for the elections.

Deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said the accusations were baseless, as Muda’s participation in the elections was aimed to provide the people with more options.

She added that the party has limited financial resources, which resulted in them fielding candidates for 10% of the state seats.

Commenting on the rumours, Muda information chief Luqman Long told Scoop that the party operates by relying on public participation and support without backing from any big funders or government machinery.

“Though it remains unclear what the intentions are behind the spread of the rumours, rest assured that this will not hinder our campaign for new politics.”

Meanwhile, Penang Muda information chief Muhammad Danial Abdul Majeed said their candidates are using their savings to fund their campaigns, aside from the party’s fundraisers.

“Some might say it is a waste of money, but Rome was not built in a day. These little efforts matter.” – July 24, 2023
