KUALA LUMPUR – Some 50 professionals, NGOs and leaders from the Indian community are gathered here today to drum up support for the unity government parties.

The event organised by the Selangor Indian Consultative Council (SICC) encouraged the Indian community in all six states facing the polls to vote to keep the unity government in power.

Its chairman and former Klang MP Charles Santiago is also confident that the current state government has the full backing of the Indian community.

“We want the state government to get a decisive victory and the Indian vote is very important to ensure that. Many from the Indian community support the unity government parties.

“The prime minister has also voiced his plans on how to help the Indian community, especially on how to eradicate poverty.

“We cannot expect the prime minister to solve issues of poverty in just six months of taking office. But he has given the commitment so now we have to give him the support,” he said at a press conference here today.

He said there will be a larger meeting this Friday at Midlands Convention Centre in Shah Alam to rally support from the Indian community to vote for the unity government parties.
