KUALA LUMPUR – Matthew Perry, one of the lead stars on iconic US sitcom Friends, died earlier today at the age of 54 in an apparent drowning.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ the actor was found Saturday in a Los Angeles area home, he was found drowned. They were responding to a call for cardiac arrest. The sources also told TMZ that he was found in a jacuzzi.

No drugs were found at the scene – Perry has a long history of substance abuse – and no foul play was involved.

Perry had a long career in television and movies, but he will always be remembered for the role of the often sarcastic Chandler Bing on the hit ’90s sitcom Friends, which ran for 10 seasons, with him in all 234 episodes. He was a fan favourite, with Chandler eventually ending up with Monica, who was played by Courteney Cox.

Behind the scenes, Perry dealt with addiction to drugs and alcohol, going in and out of rehab over the years.

Perry had also released a memoir last year, which among other things, detailed his long struggle with addiction, which was sometimes reflected in his physical appearance on Friends, often dramatically losing and gaining weight.

While appearing sober a year ago, fans were concerned with how he looked and behaved during the recent Friends reunion show, at times slurring his words.

Perry never married, only being briefly engaged. – October 29, 2023
