Timothée Chalamet, SNL slammed for making Hamas joke as Palestinians death toll climbs

Skit receives criticisms about being distasteful, vile as Israeli strikes continue in Gaza

3:47 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The third episode of Saturday Night Live’s (SNL) 49th season and its featured guest, Timothée Chalamet, is coming in for scathing criticism online after the  American-French actor made a joke on Hamas amid the mounting death toll from Israel’s war on Palestine.

The three-minute skit featured Chalamet as a despairing musician about to jump to his death over a failed music career, when he is stopped by the a comedy trio “Please Don’t Destroy” who persuade him otherwise.

The trio tried to cheer him up, offering to listen to his music, until one of them asks Chalamet the name of his band.

“Oh, it’s Haymus. H-A-M-A-S,” Chalamet replies.

A member of the comedy group then exclaims, “Hamas? Dude! I’m not sharing a song by Hamas on Instagram!”

Now being shared widely on social media, the clip is drawing flak from many who say SNL and Chalamet were “vile” in making such a joke when thousands of civilians have been killed.

An X user named Dave Spencer said, “the fact that he (Timothée) agreed to joke about Hamas and Palestine is just SO distasteful and unfortunate.”

A few other users called the joke insensitive and atrocious, while others pointed out that it only served to perpetuate the narrative that Hamas alone was to blame for the death toll, while ignoring the fact that Israel’s strikes on Gaza have killed more than 11,000 people, many of them children.

“I did not like this one bit; unfunny and disrespectful to the lives lost and what is currently happening,” said another X user named ‘Lotus’.

A user called Bobbey said the joke was in poor taste and called for SNL to be held accountable.

“This is in really poor taste. SNL should be held accountable. The programme’s official YouTube page has taken down the skit since condemnation by social media users, although the clip can still be seen on X.

Israel is retaliating after Hamas fighters killed 1,400 people in surprise attacks across the border on October 7 and took 240 hostages, according to Israeli figures. – November 13, 2023
