Malaysia’s top Punjabi artist Sukhjit from Goldkartz dies aged 34

Datuk Sukhjit Singh Gill leaves behind great musical contributions, with last release ‘Sab Gazab’ getting 34 mil on YouTube in eight months

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian music scene mourns the loss of Datuk Sukhjit Singh Gill, the esteemed Punjabi artist, widely known as Surj, from the renowned ensemble Goldkartz, who died this evening at the age of 34.

Sukhjit, the youngest son of Ipoh-based lawyer Tan Sri Darshan Singh and brother to Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill and lawyer Datuk Manjit Singh Gill, breathed his last breath at Ipoh Specialist Hospital, succumbing to a heart attack.

Speaking to Scoop, Amarjit described Sukhjit as a beloved son and brother with a vibrant spirit.

“He was a great son and brother and was loved among his friends. He was full of life, always a go-getter, and ever ready to help people.

“We are still in a state of shock that he has left us for good at such a young age. He will be dearly missed by all of us,” said Amarjit, who is also a UCI Management Board member.

A law graduate from the University of Malaya, Sukhjit made significant contributions to the music scene, with his last release, “Sab Gazab,” amassing 34 million YouTube views in just eight months.

As a pivotal member of Goldkartz, the musical duo garnered acclaim, winning numerous local and international awards and earning the title of Malaysia’s Bhangra Ambassador.

Goldkartz’s first album, “Loaded,” achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Bhangra album entirely recorded and produced in Malaysia.

This groundbreaking accomplishment earned them a well-deserved distinction in the Malaysian Book of Records.

Their achievements also include being the first Malaysian artists to perform at Wembley and creating music for Bollywood.

Sukhjit leaves behind his wife, Datin Simerjit Kaur, daughter Ajunjit Kaur Gill, parents and siblings. – December 24, 2023
