KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s mixed doubles pairs flew the flag high in the morning session at the China Open today.

Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei pulled off a surprise by upsetting world number six pair Kim Won-ho-Jeong Na-eun to march into the quarterfinals at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou, China.

The world number 11 pair won a back-and-forth contest against the South Koreans, who were quarterfinalists at the World Championships, 21-15, 15-21, 21-18 in just under an hour.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei will next face the winner between Yee Hong Wei-Lee Chia Hsin from Taiwan and home pair and tournament third seeds Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping.

In the other mixed doubles match, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing needed three games to defeat world number 26 pair Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti.

Malaysia’s world number 23 pair took 58 minutes to defeat the Indonesians 18-21, 21-19, 21-12.

Meanwhile, men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong’s run has ended at the hands of Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

The Indonesian world number 45 fought back from losing the first set to down the Malaysian world number 22 in three sets, 18-21, 21-11, 22-20.

Tze Yong had a bright start to the tournament yesterday after taking advantage of World Championships bronze medallist H.S. Prannoy’s tiredness to defeat the Indian ace 21-18, 21-13, 21-12 in a little over an hour.

Rhustavito will next take on the winner of the tie between compatriot Jonatan Christie and Canada’s Brian Yang. – September 7, 2023
