Litmus test for Malayan Tigress against Lebanon in international friendlies semis

Head Coach Soleen Al-Zoubi prepares her squad for a challenging match as players focus on progress

10:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian women’s football team are expected to face a formidable challenge against Lebanon in an international friendly tournament hosted by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF).

Head coach Soleen Al-Zoubi said the match against the Cedars will be the ultimate litmus test for the Malayan Tigress as their ticket to the final is on the line.

“I have watched how the Lebanese play over the years, and they are really strong with their physical gameplay.

“The majority of their players have been playing in Europe, and it’s going to be a challenge for our girls against them,” said the 37-year-old.

However, despite the competition, Soleen finds solace in her players’ progress and their unwavering winning spirit.

“Qualifying for the semis feels good, but I believe we should qualify with more points. It’s okay to struggle at the beginning just to ensure that we’ll be ready in the next round.

“My players have been performing well in their training sessions, and we’ve had more time to focus on their recovery.

“They are physically more relaxed and have adapted well to this environment,” she added.

Meanwhile, midfielder Usliza Usman said that she has been working closely with Soleen to become the key playmaker on the team.

“For the next game, our preparation has been going really well, and I’ve been working closely with coach Soleen to improve my weaknesses and become the main playmaker on the team.

“We are all competing for our place in the starting lineup, and I believe that whoever the coach fields in the game will give their best,” said Usliza.

Malaysia secured their spot in the semis after finishing second in Group A with a 0-0 draw against Pakistan on September 22.

The national women’s team will lock horns with Lebanon tonight at 10:30 pm (Malaysian time). — September 26, 2023.
