‘Hangzhou success can revive interest in squash after post-Nicol slump’

Sport’s inclusion in 2028 LA Olympics could also boost interest, says Ng Eain Yow

KUALA LUMPUR – Asian Games gold medalist Ng Eain Yow believes that squash’s popularity in Malaysia has declined over the years since the retirement of squash queen Datuk Nicol David.

However, speaking to reporters upon arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, he said that the national team’s performance and capability to deliver medals in Hangzhou will help revive interest from the public.

Eain Yow added that the possibility of the sport’s inclusion in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 could also boost interest among young people.

“For the past few years, the public has not paid much attention to squash because of Nicol David’s retirement, but if you look at our performance, it has been good.

“I won two Asian singles titles, and I believe that squash is in good condition, but the only downside is that it’s just not an Olympic sport.

“There are rumours that it will be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Games, but we shall see. If we can get into the Olympics, then that will boost the popularity and attract more funding.

“I think Nicol once said in an interview that she would trade all of her world titles for one Olympic gold,” said the 25-year-old.

Eain Yow also highlighted that the World Tour is also in a good place as it has moved with the times, embracing new technology to make the sport more accessible to the public. In the past five years, it has been a bit difficult to watch squash on television, but now it is more easily available.

“I hope the International Olympic Council will consider including the sport in the coming Games,” added Eain Yow.

Eain Yow’s next assignment is the Malaysia Cup next month, but he will head to Qatar first on Sunday to play in a smaller tournament as preparation.

“I want to get my rhythm back, and the tournament in Qatar will serve as preparation for the Malaysian Cup. I want to win the tournament, but it will be difficult because some of the top players will be participating.

“The gold medal in Hangzhou has boosted my confidence, and I want to maintain the momentum into the professional season,” said Eain Yow.

Malaysia came home with three gold, one silver and one bronze from Hangzhou, making them one of the most successful teams for the country at this edition of the Asian Games. – October 6, 2023
