Trio win second karate medal for Malaysia in Hangzhou

7:55 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The national women’s karate team won a silver medal in the kata final at the Linping Sports Centre Gymnasium today.

The team, comprising Lovelly Anne Robberth, Naccy Nelly Evvaferra Rojin, and Nathalia Sherawinnie Yampil, showcased an impressive performance in seven rounds, accumulating a total of 39.00 points against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Phuong, Nguyen Ngoc Tram and Luu Thi Thu Uyen.

The trio narrowly lost to the Vietnamese team, who registered 42.70 points to clinch the gold medal.

Earlier today, Malaysia advanced to the final by defeating Brunei with a score of 38.80 to 38.20.

Vietnam secured their spot in the final by defeating Cambodia 40.80 to 38.90.

Today’s silver medal marks the second karate medal for Malaysia in Hangzhou, following Lovelly’s silver in the women’s individual kata yesterday, ending Malaysia’s 13-year medal drought in the sport.

The 19-year-old narrowly fell short to Japan’s defending Asian Games champion, Kiyou Shimizu, with a total score of 39.8 to 42.6 points.

Malaysia stand 13th in the Asian Games medal standings with a total of 29 medals – five gold, seven silver and 17 bronze. – October 6, 2023
