KUALA LUMPUR – Things are looking up for independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia as he clinched his sixth World Tour title after emerging victorious at the 2023 Arctic Open today. 

This victory marks a turnaround for the 25-year-old, who has grappled with fluctuating form. He last earned a World Tour title at the Thailand Open last year. 

In an all-Malaysia men’s singles final, the former All-England champion triumphed over his former teammate, Ng Tze Yong, to claim his inaugural title of the season at Finland’s Energia Areena.  

Zii Jia, currently ranked 14th in the world, demonstrated his prowess by dispatching Tze Yong, who stands at 19th in the global rankings, in just 39 minutes in straight sets, 21-14, 21-15. 

Credit also goes to Tze Yong for reaching his first finals in a World Tour event where the 23-year-old shuttler marched into the final round after defeating several notable opponents along the way. 

The Johorean defeated world number 10 Chou Tien-chen (second round) and 12th-ranked Lu Guangzu (third round), before taking down 16th-ranked Kanta Tsuneyama in the semis.  

Meanwhile, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun fell short of Denmark’s formidable pair Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the men’s doubles category. 

The world number 23 Malaysians and Taipei Open champions succumbed to a hard-fought defeat, 18-21, 17-21, in a 39-minute battle.  

Their journey to the finals included an impressive victory over former world champions and compatriot Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik in the opening round. 

They then continued to beat Japan’s 26th-ranked Keiichiro Matsui-Yoshinori Takeuchi (second round) and Indonesia’s 21st-ranked Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Rambitan (third round), before taking down Denmark’s 30th-ranked Rasmus Kjær-Frederik Søgaard in the semis. – October 15, 2023
