Azraai Khor urges strategic financial planning amid Kedah FC’s crisis

The legendary coach expresses concern over club’s decline and calls for effective resource management to restore past glory

KUALA LUMPUR — Former Kedah FC coach Azraai Khor Abdullah has voiced concern over the club’s current financial crisis, advising that the management must realign their priorities to overcome the challenges.

His remarks follow the majority shareholder’s acknowledgement of financial difficulties leading to unpaid salaries for players, coaches, and team officials since August.

The legendary football coach, known for his historic back-to-back domestic trebles (2006/07 and 2007/08), expressed disappointment at the club’s decline from one of Malaysian football’s premier clubs.

“It’s sad to see the club’s current state, especially considering its illustrious past in Malaysian football,” said Azraai when contacted.

“Players and officials should be paid accordingly so that you can see positive results on the pitch.

“The management needs to channel funds effectively, directing resources to areas that directly benefit the club’s growth rather than squandering them on non-essential matters.”

Expressing disbelief at the club’s performance amid substantial investments, Azraai referenced his coaching era when success was achieved with significantly less financial support.

“Based on what I’ve heard, the club has received a total of RM120 million in funds over the past four years (2019-2023), which is like RM30 million per year.

“That’s a lot of money being spent, and I can’t believe why the team hasn’t been performing with such an investment.

“During my time, we were only given a budget of RM3.5 million, and we were competitive and won many tournaments. Nowadays, even with an annual budget of RM30 million, there has been so much chaos in the club,” he added.

Azraai also commended the unwavering support from the club’s fans, recognising their pivotal role during challenging times.

With prudent management, support, and transparency in financial matters, he is hopeful that Kedah FC could navigate through the current adversity and reclaim its esteemed position in Malaysian football.

Meanwhile, Kedah FC’s majority shareholder, Tan Sri Mohd Daud Bakar, clarified the financial situation, citing a disparity between the club’s income and expenses rather than leaks or withdrawn sponsorships.

In an effort to raise funds, the club recently organised a fan engagement tour series around the state in partnership with the Green Yellow Supporters Club, which includes the sale of merchandise.

Despite the financial challenges, Kedah FC continues to perform on the field, currently ranking third in the Super League and striving for AFC Cup qualification.

The club boasts a prestigious history, having claimed the Super League title three times (1993, 2006, and 2007) and winning the Malaysia FA Cup five times (1990, 1993, 2007, 2008, and 2016). — November 10, 2023
