Sports ministry announces initiative ahead of tomorrow’s Kyrgyzstan qualifier

7:44 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – For each ticket purchased for a Harimau Malaya match, RM1 will be contributed to the conservation of the Malayan tiger, as announced by the Youth and Sports Ministry today.

This initiative, in collaboration with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), aligns with the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry’s endeavours in biodiversity conservation.

“Did you know? The Malayan tiger is a revered symbol and namesake for the Malaysian national football team.

“As such, FAM and the Youth and Sports Ministry join in the effort to combat the threat of the Malayan tiger’s extinction,” read the statement.

The Harimau Malaya’s upcoming challenge unfolds in the second round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup, with Malaysia’s Group D opener against Kyrgyzstan at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium tomorrow night.

As of this evening, FAM reports the sale of 8,907 tickets for the 85,000-capacity stadium, with the match scheduled to kick off at 9pm.

In the Group D draw, the team led by Kim Pan-gon, currently ranked 137th globally, face formidable opponents – the 72nd-ranked Oman and 152nd-ranked Taiwan.

Having ended a four-decade wait to qualify for the 2024 Asian Cup on merit, the national football team now direct their focus towards securing one of the 18 coveted spots in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. – November 15, 2023
