Cycling federation urges swift resolution in alleged sexual harassment case

MNCF emphasises urgency for police to conclude investigation, expressing concern for all parties involved

7:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) acting deputy president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill today pleaded with the police to conclude their investigation into the alleged sexual harassment of a female national mountain bike rider.

In March, the alleged victim lodged a police report against her coach, claiming he sexually harassed her during a training session in preparation for the Cambodia SEA Games in May.

“We at MNCF are waiting for the police to complete their investigation. I know this has been on hold for the athlete and coach in question.

“I also think it is slightly unfair for all parties involved, but we don’t want to get ahead of the police.

“We hope the investigation can be wrapped up as soon as possible so that we can make a final decision on this matter,” Amarjit told reporters today after a working committee meeting with the National Sports Council.

After receiving news of the police report, MNCF immediately suspended the coach pending the investigation.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh then revealed that the coach in question had resigned from the national squad.

Undeterred by the traumatising episode, the alleged victim, reportedly in her 20s, went on to represent Malaysia at the SEA Games in Phnom Penh. – December 14, 2023
