Malaysia Open: Se-young makes history as first South Korean woman to win singles event

KUALA LUMPUR – An Se-young has kicked off the new year in historic fashion, securing victory at the Malaysian Open and etching her name in the record books as the first South Korean women’s singles shuttler to claim the prestigious title.

Despite battling with only 70% fitness, the 21-year-old showcased her resilience in a thrilling three-set clash against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying, who was eyeing her fifth title, to win 10-21, 21-10, 21-18.

The reigning world champion is pleased to create history on Malaysian soil, emphasising that her primary focus entering the year was to regain her optimal physical condition.

“Entering this year, I was more focused on getting back to my best condition. 

“My knee is still bothering me, and I am focused on getting it back to the best condition,” she said.

When asked about the possibility of taking a break, Se-young indicated that the decision would involve a consultation with her coaches. 

She remains determined to prioritise her physical well-being while maintaining her competitive edge.

Despite being labelled as the one to beat at the upcoming Olympics by her opponent Tai Tzu Ying, Se-young humbly downplayed such expectations.

“The Olympics is such a big tournament; it is difficult to put expectations like this on myself. I would rather focus on my gameplay and my conditioning,” she added. – January 14, 2024
