KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced a substantial boost for the Football Association of Malaysia, allocating an extra RM5 million in funding to improve the national team.

His announcement came following a commendable performance from Harimau Malaya at the 2023 Asian Cup match held in Qatar.

“I want to congratulate our Harimau Malaya and FAM for an amazing game last night (draw against South Korea).

“After witnessing their undying fighting spirit, on the recommendation and consideration of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the government has decided to approve an additional allocation of RM5 million to be given to FAM,” he told the media at a restaurant in Desa Sri Hartamas today.

Hannah, however, clarified that the allocated funds must not be used for operational expenses by the national football governing body.

“The funds cannot be used to pay the salaries of FAM staff, their utility bills or office rental costs.

“It should only be used for the development of football and activities that are necessary for our team.

“This is a one-off allocation for the year 2024,” she said, joining the premier over lunch.

In a thrilling game, Harimau Malaya went toe to toe with the Taeguk Warriors staging a comeback in the second half after going down 1-0 in the first.

Faisal Halim, Arif Aiman Hanapi and Romel Morales scored the goals in the 3-3 draw ensuring Malaysia ended their Asian Cup campaign with one point to their name.

However, Malaysia return home after losing 4-0 to Jordan and 1-0 to Bahrain earlier in the competition. – January 26, 2024
